Getty Images Apple has confirmed the acquisition of NextVR, a startup that provides live sports and other content for virtual reality (VR) headsets. A deal between the pair had first been reported in early April. Financial terms have not been disclosed, although Apple news outlet 9to5Mac valued the acquisition at US$100 million last month. Bloomberg reports that the company is shutting down, suggesting it is being absorbed entirely by Apple. NextVR has now changed its website this week to read: ‘We’re heading in a new direction’, while thanking its ‘partners and fans around the world for the role you played in building this awesome platform for sports, music and entertainment experiences in virtual reality'. How NextVR brought virtual reality highlights to the NBA FinalsPrior to its buyout, NextVR held contracts with major US sports properties, including an ongoing partnership with the National Basketball Association (NBA), that saw its VR experience used for full games and offered as part of the NBA League Pass over-the-top (OTT) platform.
