Blizzard announces cancellation of BlizzCon 2020

In a blog post Tuesday from BlizzCon executive producer Saralyn Smith, it was announced that the popular annual event that typically occurs in late October/early November and celebrates past, present and future Blizzard games and culture with multiple competitions and activations, has been shelved. The decision was made in light of the uncertainty of holding a convention given evolving health and safety guidelines due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. However, it was noted in the post that some form of online event or presence that "might be able to channel the BlizzCon spirit and connect with you" is in the works, with a preliminary timeline of early next year. In 2019, for example, the Overwatch World Cup, Hearthstone Global Finals and StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals were three competitions that took place at BlizzCon.
