Report: WNBA eyes MGM or IMG Academy to host entire 2020 season

Getty ImagesThe Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) will stage games at a single location if it goes ahead with a season this year, according to the Associated Press (AP). The news agency reported that MGM Resorts in Las Vegas and Florida’s IMG Academy have emerged as the WNBA’s preferred sites, but said logistical details around how the venues would host the league and its 12 teams remain unclear. The 2020 WNBA season was due to tip off on 15th May but had to be put on hold as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The league is yet to announce a new start date for the campaign. WNBA’s 2020 draft ratings up 123% for ESPN on previous yearSpeaking to the AP, WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert did not confirm whether MGM Resorts or IMG Academy were the frontrunners to host the league, but said the organisation is “looking at the pros and cons of a number of different locations”. Should the WNBA go ahead with its 2020 season at a single site, it would adopt a similar approach to the men’s National Basketball Association (NBA), which recently confirmed talks with Disney about resuming its 2019/20 season at the media giant’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.
