Minnesota Timberwolves VP John Thomas: ‘I’ve Known You for So Long, We’ve Never Had the Conversation of Race’

Former NBA player John Thomas was born and raised in south Minneapolis, growing up just a few blocks away from where George Floyd died on May 25 under the knee of a police officer. After high school, Thomas played for the University of Minnesota and was a captain when the Gophers made their first Final Four appearance during the 1997 NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The New York Knicks selected Thomas with the 25th overall pick in the ’97 NBA draft. But before he played a game in New York, the Knicks traded him to the Boston Celtics, beginning a five-year journeyman career that saw him also play for the Toronto Raptors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Memphis Grizzlies, Atlanta . . .
